7 1/2" Conical Shield Boss - 14 gauge

The Shield Boss (also known as an Umbo) was designed to deflect blows from the centre of round shields whilst providing a place to mount the shield’s grip. Shield bosses were a common feature on shields that relied on a punching motion to block attacks, such as Roman, Saxon and Viking Shields. In later centuries when the bar grip was superseded by arm straps (enarmes) the Shield Boss became more of an ornamental feature. Examples of this can be seen on the kite shields used by Norman knights at the Battle of Hastings.

Our 7 1/2” Shield Boss is perfect for reenactors who are making or repairing their own shields. It is constructed from 14 gauge steel and is polished to remove any spinning marks that are created during manufacture. It is pre-drilled with ¼” holes for easy attachment to the shield.
